MUSIC WORKX

This ART WORKX PILOT group will run for SIX weeks.  Each week is $5.00.  You must- sign up for all six weeks.  If it receives enough registrations (number will be limited), we will continue the group.  Two age groups will run simultaneously (8 - 18 years old and 18+).  After ART WORKX the classes will be transitioned into OpenSpot Theatre.  Please be sure to sign up for that as well so that we have proper head count.  If you cannot afford the classes, please be sure to contact Zee Kennedy at zeekennedy@michiganucc.org for confidential sponsorship.

We have contracted with one of the most respected and well-known music therapist in Washtenaw county! Life Dynamic Music Therapy is expanding their practice adding more music therapists.  Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Music therapy interventions can be designed to:

• Promote wellness
• Manage stress
• Alleviate pain
• Express feelings
• Enhance memories
• Improve communication
• Promote physical rehabilitation

In our case as parents with those that have developmental disabilities, it helps our kids learn emotional regulation.  Music therapists may use drumming interventions to work on bilateral coordination (use of both arms), singing exercises to improve articulation, adapted music lessons to improve fine motor skills and cognition, and a variety of other music-based interventions.

The second half of ART WORKX includes a fun cognitively appropriate art project that may take a few weeks to complete.  Each art project will focus on improving cognitive skills, motor-function, self-esteem, self-awareness, and social skills.
